Thoughts on writing success

COMMENT. Jim Baen and Eric Flint, as well as other fiction writers and editors, have both made statements to the effect that every writer and publisher is competing for a reader's "beer and movie money." While not always literally true, their underlying point is all too accurate. A successful fiction writer has to leave his or her readers feeling that their time and funds were well-spent.

Orbit bulks up for a sci-fi smackdown
Following its US launch in 2007, science fiction publisher Orbit has reported its intention to expand both lists. In the US, Orbit is going to double the size of the list over the next three years, taking its output of sci-fi novels to 70-80 titles per year by 2011. In the UK it will increase the size of the list by approximately 10 per cent each year over the next three years.

Science fiction author Richard Morgan has won this year's Arthur C Clarke award for best SF novel, with his title Black Man. He basically dedicated his acceptance speech to his mom, who sadly passed away while he was writing the book, causing it to be delivered a year late. In the US, this novel was released as Thirteen.

Steampunk, the new fiction anthology from Tachyon Publications, made its debut before Australian audiences when co-editor Jeff VanderMeer was interviewed by Ramona Koval, host of Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Radio National (ABC RN).

Blake's 7 back from the dead
Sky One has told SFcrowsnest.com that it has greenlit development on two scripts of the 80s science fiction series Blake's 7. Elaine Pyke, commissioning editor over at Sky is working with Andrew Mark Sewell at B7 Productions, a subsidiary of B7 Media, on a reinvention of the classic scifi show. Sky One has ordered two scripts for a potential pilot.

Were's your wolf?
BBC3 has ordered a six-part series of the one-off drama, Being Human from Touchpaper Television. Starring Russell Tovey, Andrea Riseborough and Guy Flanaghan, the pilot of Being Human followed the lives of three flatmates; a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost in a look at the friendship between three 20-something outsiders trying to find their way in an enticing but complicated world.

A Dark Vision of science fiction
Sky Movies will be running their dark and nasty sci-fi season from 26th May–1st June 2008 on Sky Movies. Their line-up includes Blade Runner: The Final Cut, The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly, V for Vendetta and Ridley & Tony Scott’s The Andromeda Strain mini series.
