Druid King
01/12/2003 Source: Stella Pang

I read 'Pillars Of The Earth' by Ken Follett in 5 days and that was a lot longer but highly recommended.

It's taken me a very long time to read this book (well long for me). It's not because I've never read a historically-based novel before, I read 'Pillars Of The Earth' by Ken Follett in 5 days and that was a lot longer but highly recommended.

The Druid King by Norman SpinradThe only reason I can think of for this is that I got bored with it. Why? I don't know, the story should have held my interest.

It had all the ingredients - Julius Caesar's rise to power by conquering Gaul. There was political intrigue, Romans, Gauls, Druids, fighting big battles, etc but for me it just didn't 'gel'.

I finished reading the book a couple of hours ago and to be honest I would be pushed to tell you about any of the characters and what actually occurred except some things about Caesar and Brutus but then that would be from previous reading (did Caesar at school in Latin!).

I know I should go and search the Internet and find out more but, to be honest, I'm not that interested. Some books based on history make you want to find out more, this one hasn't done this for me.

I know I haven't said much about the actual story but unless you are into early political intrigue then leave this on the shelf.

In my opinion you could change the names of the main characters and you would have the present state of affairs in Iraq covered (oh and update the weapons).

So onwards to the next book.

Can anyone tell me what I've just read?!!
