This is a rather remarkable book in that we see the art of Jason Engle mature from a few years back until now. He is very much a digital artist relying on PaintShop Pro, a bit of art software available to us all, to do his work.
Saying that, all his preliminary work is done in pencil before being scanned in, so it's a reminder to all you budding artists out there that you do need your basic skills.
Much of Engle's work is for fantasy role-playing and card games, so unless you're into them, you're not likely to see much of his work.
Indeed, the nature of this work is very much in the heroic mode with some unusual but striking figures. The evolution of Engle's style is more to how he's developed his colours and figure depth as much as anything, as well as the accompanying mood. Hopefully, people seeing his work here will ask him to develop other themes.
In many respects, I think this book will appeal more to RPGers than the traditional fantasy or SF art fan and if you're not sure, would probably recommend looking at it from off the shelf in the first instance.
