Jack Stein is a different kind of detective. He likes to work with objects after which his psychic dreams tell him what to do. But Jack has a problem, his dreams are no longer working. For this case, he will have to go on his instincts plus there is a dame involved.

Well two if you count Billie, the kid he has taken on since their move out of the Locality (as documented in 'Wyrm Hole'). The real dame is trouble with a capital T and all Jack's instincts tell him that without any psychic powers needed. She is after an artefact and needs to get it back fast.

There are definite hints of the Maltese Falcon here.

A Science Fiction novel can set itself anywhere and anywhen and in this case it's a simple detective story that has been converted into Science Fiction by virtue of its location in a future where interstellar travel is possible.

'Metal Sky' has lots of chat, lots of description and the action such as it is paced well. It is pretty forgettable as soon as you put it down and there are no vast alien world to get to grips with. If you like detective stories then this is a minor one to add to your reading list but don't expect it to set the world alight.
