My first comment would be only half the blood? It seems like it never stops flowing in this depressing story. I remember enjoying the last couple of novels but this one seems caught up in unrelenting violence. It reminded me of the sort of film I would never choose to go and see at the cinema. Somehow, even reading about violence makes me feel culpable.

Joe Pitt is a man alone. Except he isn't now. His girl-friend is dying from a disease he could possibly cure by infecting her with the Vyrus. He struggles with his continuing existence. Working for Terry of the Coalition, Joe is sent to make deals with the other factions before the whole of Manhattan breaks apart in a blood bath. Meeting the Freaks of Coney Island is just the beginning of a long, dark night of the soul for Joe. His sometime friends are there to help him, possibly, and the night is full of blood. Some of it his.

By the end of the novel, life and death have moved on. The players have changed and Joe is still in the game. Just.

A book about vampires was never going to be a walk in the park with daffodils but I was reaching for the sick bag at some points. Other than that, the story of Joe Pitt moves on apace and will conclude over the next two novels. An interview with the author gives an indication of the direction Joe is taking. I still want to find out how the overall story arc plays out but I will be holding on to my lunch quite carefully.
