Another novel about Sookie Stackhouse is always welcome. You are guaranteed a good story with a comfortable conclusion. Charlaine Harris expertly and deftly moves Sookie along life's road just throwing a few hand grenades down to see how she copes.
Still reeling from all the previous attrition, Sookie must now deal with the death of a relative. She wasn't a close relative and was already dead. Hadley had been a vampire for a while but she was favoured consort of the New Orleans Vampire Queen and her oh-so-final death is a mystery to be solved. Sookie might be able to read human minds but dealing with the supernatural requires some supplementary qualities.
With that to cope with, Sookie could do without her love life coming back to haunt her. The trouble with dating vampires is they just won't lie down. Bill, her first love, is still around and the gorgeous undead Eric who Sookie briefly thought would be hers is still seeking the truth about a relationship that was wiped from his memory. Then there is Quinn, a Were and a tiger of a man. Yep, a tiger, folks. Some girls have all the luck.
For a short novel, there is plenty of plot, plenty of hurt, emotional and physical and some deep thought about the nature of relationships.
I think, once again with Harris, that this is pretty good value. It packs in heaps that would take other writers twice as long to get over. It also emotionally engages the reader with a heroine who isn't a super-woman but has an edge over us mere mortals. She is entirely believable and sympathetic character who we always hope will triumph over the bad guys and, of course, find true love.
