For those not in the know, the Hugo Awards are the science fiction and fantasy 'Oscars' of the book world - named after Hugo Gernsback, the editor of Astounding (the SF pulp magazine of the 1930s that coined the term 'science fiction'). We've listed the nominees below and the 2000AD winners will be announced at the World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago, Illinois, August 31st - September 4th. These are all very good books - we've read most of them here at the 'Nest, but they are predictably US-centric in the authors chosen. Why? Because both the nominees and winners are decided by the World SF Con gonks, and more often than not, these are held in in the US of A. This gripe aside, check out any titles you haven't read ... our top Hugo tip for the bookies is "A Deepness in the Sky" by Vernor Vinge. 1. A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold more about this book 2. Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson more about this book 3. Darwin's Radio by Greg Bear more about this book 4.
